Chimney
Inspections

Multiple Chimneys to be inspected

There are varying levels to a chimney inspection based on the findings of the initial Level 1 Inspection. A Level 1 Inspection should include a check for soundness (or durability) of the structural parts of the chimney, fireplace and flue.

We look for signs of wear and tear from regular use and let you know what needs to be worked on and why. Next we check to make sure the chimney isn't allowing any combustibles to come in contact with unintended parts of your house outside of the chimney, such as the interior of your walls and ceilings. The third step is to remove any "nature" from your chimney which may block the venting of your fireplace. This includes checking for leaves, animals and their nests, and anything else that may have fallen into your chimney since the last inspection. Lastly, we assess whether combustible byproducts (like creosote) have built up on the chimney walls to a point that they pose a risk of catching fire. This level of inspection should be adequate for safely operating a regularly used fireplace with no known issues, as long as it's performed at least once annually.

In the event of a malfunction with your fireplace or heating system, natural disaster which may impact chimney functionality (flooding for example) or even when changing the system, type of fuel or adding a liner you will want to consider a Level 2 Inspection, which includes video scanning of the chimney's interior.

A Level 3 Inspection, which includes accessing parts of your house that are usually sealed off by walls, may be required if a problem is identified by a Level 2 Inspection.

Creosote buildup in front of the exhaust valve of a wood stove
Did you know the leading cause of chimney fires is unchecked creosote buildup?

According to mass.gov, in 2018, there were 556 incidents involving a chimney, fireplace, or wood stove in Massachusetts, causing 1 death, 3 civilian injuries and 7 firefighter injuries, and roughly $3 million in property losses.

You see, fireplaces and wood stoves are designed to allow us to heat our homes while safely containing a fire fueled by wood. Our chimneys are there so that the unwanted byproducts of the burning wood, such as smoke, water vapor and various gases, can be safely directed out of our homes.

When all of these substances hit the cooler parts of the chimney, condensation occurs which leaves behind a residue that sticks to the inner walls of the chimney, called creosote. Creosote is a black or brown residue that can either be crusty and flaky, have a sticky, tar-like appearance or be shiny and hardened. Regardless of form, creosote is always highly combustible and if you allow creosote to build up, the next time you light your fireplace may lead to a chimney fire!

Be sure to have annual chimney inspections and stay ahead of the creosote building up in your chimney. Not sure when your last sweeping was? It may be in your best interest to schedule a sweeping with us today! In most cases, we can perform the sweeping and inspection the same day we come out to you.

Stone Veneer
Installation

Stone veneer is a durable, versatile, and cost-efficient alternative to natural stone. Its flexibility makes it great to use on rounded surfaces and it is lightweight and easier to cut than natural stone making it suitable for a variety of indoor and outdoor projects.

When installed properly, this type of veneer can give your home or fireplace a stunning touch of stone; and the wide variety of styles and colors makes it easy to perfectly match the décor you already love.

Stone veneer adds elegance and it’s also built to last, you won’t experience sun-bleaching or fading due to the elements. It's also less porous than natural stone which means cleaning it will not require any special chemical or solutions. Check out some of our previous stone veneer installations and schedule an estimate with us today!

Masonry
Repair

Loose Bricks in need of Masonry Repair

A structure built out of individual units, usually bound by mortar, is called masonry. The term also refers to the units themselves. Even the highest quality materials have a finite amount of wear that they can sustain before needing to be replaced. As with most things in home maintenance, detecting and solving masonry problems in a proactive manner is key to keeping repairs from becoming a huge inconvenience (and expense!). It’s important to schedule an inspection by a certified professional when you first notice any damage, regardless of if it seems superficial, as even a small crack in one brick can be indicative of a bigger problem.

At Advance Chimney LLC we specialize in identifying and repairing faulty or failing masonry. Our goal is to keep your masonry looking and performing at its peak. Our experienced team of CSIA Certified masons will have your chimney (and any other masonry around your home) in excellent functioning order for years to come!
